Intersectionality is a lens used to study or discuss how different social categories affect an individual’s life. Sex, gender, race, ability and age are some of the categories that can influence access to resources and services as well as treatment or mistreatment.

Kimberly Crenshaw developed this theory to examine disenfranchisement among different groups. In a 2016 TED Talk, she stated that she began to use this term to explore how many “social justice problems like racism and sexism are often overlapping, creating multiple levels of social injustice.”
